Here is a template you can use to write elected officials:

The Honorable whatever is appropriate….(if sent by email to MP or MLA it is easy to copy to Ministers of appropriate departments; can use for HRM councillors too.)

Dear…………….
I am writing to express my support for the Six Principles for a Just Recovery which have been endorsed by over 150 organizations including Citizens for Public Justice and KAIROS: Canadian Ecumenical Justice Initiatives. These principles are:

  1. Put people’s health and wellbeing first, no exceptions;
  2. Strengthen the social safety net and provide relief directly to people;
  3. Prioritize the needs of workers and communities;
  4. Build resilience to prevent future crises;
  5. Build solidarity and equity across communities, generations, and borders; and
  6. Uphold indigenous rights and work in partnership with indigenous peoples;

You can read more about each specific principle in detail by visiting: justrecoveryforall.ca These principles are the kind of big-scale vision for what our post-COVID-19 society needs to become.

It is my Christian faith which calls me to endorse these principles and to bring them to your attention as my (MP, MLA, Councillor etc the Minister of Environment…… whatever is appropriate). I believe that we must make life better, more just and more equitable for all people out of our duty to love our neighbour and to care for Earth out of love for all God’s creation. I have been especially concerned that we must act to prevent further climate change in the few years we have left to halt the damage. This climate emergency must not be forgotten as we recover from the COVID 19 crisis. Indeed, it is even more urgent that we take action since scientists inform us of the relationship between climate change, ecological destruction, species extinction and the emergence of new viruses. Moreover, the COVID 19 pandemic has illuminated the stark reality of the inequities and injustices in our society which we ignore at our peril. We now have a unique opportunity for transformation for the sake of people and for the health of the planet. The six principles in their detail incorporate the health of the planet with the health of human life on a global as well as local scale. For example, by paying attention to the real needs of people and the planet we can move away from the destructive use of fossil fuels, while providing for a just transition for workers. I ask you to keep these 6 principles in mind as you make decisions for policy and financing in the next months and years.

My particular appeal to you is for action on….. (E.g. Green energy, housing, transit, healthcare, universal basic income, stop fossil fuel subsidies, food security…….whatever you wish to emphasize.)

Thank you for your attention. I look forward to your response
Yours sincerely,
