First Potluck Church of 2020: Wed. Jan. 15

Join us for fellowship, fun and a good meal at the first Potluck Church of 2020 on Wed. Jan. 15 at 5:30 pm in the sanctuary. There will be a bit of singing, talking, and listening. The theme, aside from food, is "Where would you like to be on holiday at this time?" Bring something to share and a good appetite.

Study leave for Betsy

Rev. Betsy Hogan is on study leave for the next three weeks. Guest preachers for the period include Rev. Robyn Brown-Hewitt (Jan. 19), Margaret Machum (Jan. 26) and Sara Bartel (Feb. 2). The weekly Bible study will be rescheduled for February.

For pastoral care, contact the church office (902) 423-9209.

Rescheduling of Communion, Quarterly meetings for Feb. 16

It was very difficult to try to make the right decision about cancelling the worship service on Jan. 12. Because of Communion and the Quarterly meetings, far more than the usual number of folks might feel as though they "should make the effort". When freezing rain would start was unclear. The Parklands Bus, St. John's United, and Hope United had cancelled, and St. Andrew's United had cancelled its annual meeting. Thus the call was made to cancel our Sunday activities at St. Matthew's – maybe it would have been fine, but what's done is done.

Communion and the Quarterly Meetings will now happen on Sun. Feb. 16.

\If you planned to make a special donation to the Benevolent Fund, which provides a little money for the minister to respond to people in great need, you can leave your contribution in the collection plate any Sunday. The Benevolent Fund is not part of the church budget, but rather a money-in-money-out fund. The minister only spends what we donate (about $800 per year), and money typically goes to people who come to the church for special assistance (e.g., to pay a power bill). Donations are eligible for a tax receipt, of course.

Book Club meeting Jan. 21

The Book Club meets Tue. Jan. 21 at 2 pm at 1470 Summer St. The book is The Boy on the Beach by Tima Kurdi. The author wrote: "My nephew, Alan Kurdi, was a young refugee. He washed up dead on a Turkish beach in 2015… with this story I will plant in your heart the hope for a better world." For more information contact Elaine Murray at edamur50@gmail.com

Singing at Lewis Hall Jan. 28

Members of the choir and friends will be visiting Parklands' Lewis Hall on Tues. Jan. 28 at 2 pm for a one-hour sing of some old favorites. Karen Pearce of our congregation, who is resident there, will be our host. This is weather-dependent! But if you would like to join the choir, or need a ride, contact Jill Rafuse, (902) 492-4523.
